Elizabethtown Lions Club
“We Serve”
SEPTEMBER 2004

President’s Message
I am writing this article as the E-town Fair is about to begin. I am sure everyone is anticipating a big Bingo week. A special thanks goes out to Lion Chris and his squad. Our focus will soon be shifting to the Car Cruise, which will take place on September 11. Lion Keith and his Cruisers are looking forward to a real influx of four wheelers. Susan Grubb, from the Merchandiser, is planning a feature article on this big event. It should appear in the September 8th edition.
We still have some positions that have to be filled. An immediate need is to find a White Cane chairman. Perhaps two people could head this committee. Lion Dean would be available o provide some guidelines. Lion Dale is still seeking help with ornaments and the football banquet. We are also looking for persons to serve as Chaplains.
A reminder that our next meeting is on September 14th. Please make an effort to attend and remember that all guests are welcome.

Programs for September
Tuesday, September 14 , 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – Some of us are old enough to remember Wyatt Earp. The TV version, that is, which starred Hugh O’Brien and his Buntline Special. Tanya West will be armed with information, but not with a revolver, when she presents a program on the Hugh O’Brien Foundation at this meeting. Tanya is an E-town Kiwanian who has many community service and youth development interests. She will share her enthusiasm as well as her topic.
Tuesday, September 28, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – We are all living longer and that is a good thing. But it does have financial implications. A fairly recent insurance product has been developed to address our needs because we are living longer – long-term care insurance. Bill Pitzer (or his representative) will educate us on this relatively new product in the insurance industry. Bill promised that we will not need to sign up before we leave this night.
Greeters for September
Lion Glen Leib has agreed to, again this year, arrange for “official greeters” to be at the entrance of our meeting room at each regular meeting to greet us as we enter. For this month he has secured the following Lions for this task:
September 14 – Lions Chris Metzler and Dave Mueller
September 28 – Lions Harry McMullen and Dale Williams
Dues Statements
With the beginning of the new Lions Year in July comes a new round of dues statements. By a vote of the Board of Directors several years ago, our Club now offers two different schedules for paying your annual dues – quarterly, at $28.00 per, or annually at $112.00. The enclosed statement lists your current status but, if you prefer, you may change this by simply writing your check in the other amount. Lion George will be able to adjust your records accordingly.
Keep in mind several things about the dues you pay to belong to the Elizabethtown Lions Club. First, a significant portion of your dues goes to Lions International in payment of your dues to them. Secondly, the amount you pay includes $2.50 per regular meeting towards
the cost of your meal, and lastly, the Club is “absorbing” a small portion of your dues paid to Lions International.
As always, the Club will appreciate prompt remission of your dues for the 2004-05 Lions Year. Your check may be given to Lion George at an upcoming regular meeting, or mailed to the Club at the address shown at the bottom of the statement.
Another Successful Project
The close of the Elizabethtown Fair on August 28 brought to an end another successful BINGO project for our Club. Like most of the vendors at the Fair, we benefited from the large crowds each evening and, although it is still too soon to know exactly how much profit we made, we are confident it will be a good one. Once again, our members showed their willingness to put forth the time and effort to make this happen. Special recognition, and congratulations, go to Lion Chris Metzler and his committee for handling this major event. Each night manager, and every Lion (and wives) who worked at the tent contributed in a meaningful way to the outcome of this project.
Car Cruise
Lion Keith Perry and his committee have been quietly working over the past few months to put together our next project – the Car Cruise. This one-day event will take place on Saturday, September 11, at the Fair Grounds. This will be the third year for this project and, although we have suffered from rainy weather both previous times, we are expecting a nice day this year. If you haven’t already signed up to assist with this event, please do so at either regular meeting this month, or contact Lion Keith to see what still needs to be covered that day. This is becoming one of the “special” events of our year so you will want to be a part of it.
White Cane Days
Lion Dean Dochterman has announced that our annual White Cane Days will be held this year on Friday, October 15, and Saturday, October 16. We will have our usual two locations – Redner’s, and the K-Mart – and we will need Lions to man both stations throughout these two days. The task is very simple, and Lion Dean will establish shifts so that nobody will be asked to do too much. Come to our next meeting prepared to sign up for a convenient time when you can help with this project.
Vacancy to be Filled
We have a vacancy in the office of Third Vice-President, due to Lion Henri’s death. One member has volunteered to serve but if you would like to be a candidate, please contact Lion Bill ASAP. We plan to hold the election October 12, with installation on October 26.
