“We Serve”
OCTOBER 2004
President’s Message
I am very happy to report that Lion Dean M. Dochterman has accepted the responsibility of being our Third Vice-President. We all know he will serve us well. He is also our White Cane Chairman again since his work duties have been altered. We still do not have a chaplain per se, but the Board has decided to compile a list of Lions who would serve on a rotating basis. If anyone would like to serve in this capacity, please let me know.
Our September Car Cruise committee should be given many kudos for making this project a large success. The sun was shining as well as the over 100 vehicles that graced the fairgrounds. Henry Ford would have been proud that the “Best of Show” was a grandson of the old Model T.
I feel everyone needs to work a little harder to get more present members out to our meetings. It would be great to have a large assemblage on October 12th when our District Governor, Lion Fred Lenhart, makes a visit.
All Lions are invited to attend the Region V Rally on November 11th at Four Seasons. The starting time is 6:30 p.m. and the cost is $17.00 per person. This price will cover a roast beef dinner and some good entertainment. See me if you are interested.
Lion Bill
Two “Attaboys”
Congratulations go out to two different Lions committees for jobs well done. We now have the final report on the Bingo Project, and its Chairman, Lion Chris Metzler, reports that we called 375 games of regular Bingo, 43 “specials,” and six games of “Blackout.” The biggest game of the week occurred on Saturday night when we sold 190 card-packets for Blackout. We netted approximately $3000.00 for our efforts that week. By doing a little math, you can estimate that this project yielded approximately $15.00 per man-hour spent at the tent. So, although it is a rather labor intensive project, from that perspective, it appears the efforts were well worth it and, more importantly, the funds raised will go a long way in helping us to carry out our mission of serving those less fortunate than we are. So, nice going Lion Chris and your committee members!
The second “Attaboy” is extended to Lion Keith Perry and his committee for the work they did on the Car Cruise held September 11. Final financial data is not yet in but, based on the number of cars shown that day – 101, to be exact – we should realize a profit from this event, as well. For the first time in its three-year existence, we had good weather for this year’s Cruise and that brought many new exhibitors to our show. It was a fun event and Lion Keith and his group are already making plans for a bigger and better show next year. Nice going, Lion Keith, and your committee!
Greeters for October
Lions Mike Myers and Dave Mueller will serve as our official greeters for the meeting on October 12, and this responsibility will be handled by Lions Bob Fackler and Jay Walmer when we meet on October 26.
Programs for October
Tuesday, October 12, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – The annual “official” visit of the District Governor will take place at this meeting. Lion Fred Lenhart, from the Millersville Club, is serving as District Governor this year and he will have with him the Region Chairman, Lion Leonard Smith, and our Zone Chairman, Lion Andy Fantom. You will want to come out to meet and greet this year’s District Officers and show them what a great, loud, and fun-loving group we are.
Tuesday, October 26, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – Our guest speaker this evening will be Mr. Paul Culbreth. His talk will focus on some of the local ties to the historic “underground railroad” which functioned during and immediately after the Civil War. Paul holds a Masters degree in Social Work from Temple University and formerly served as the Director of Social Services for the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SABVI). This promises to be both interesting and informative so you won’t want to miss it.
Help Needed
Our annual effort known as White Cane Days will take place this month. Specifically, we will be soliciting donations on Friday, October 15, and Saturday, October 16, from 8:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. at two separate locations – Redner’s Market, and the local K-Mart. Lion Dean Dochterman is chairing this event and, although quite a few members have already signed up to assist, there are still some open slots in the schedule. If you haven’t indicated the time(s) you can help, please contact Lion Dean (361-1812) ASAP. The schedule is blocked out in two-hour shifts so nobody will have to commit too much time to this project. Oh, and one more thing – when you are soliciting, be sure to politely ask the folks as they pass if they are willing to assist the blind and visually impaired. If they aren’t asked, most people will simply walk by, but when asked, many of them will give generously.
Going Global
Several of the local government officials recently visited Elizabethtown’s “Sister City,” Letterkenny, Ireland. They took with them for presentation to the Lions Club in that Irish town several items from our Club. Their Club had requested that we share some of our ideas, projects, and activities with them and, hopefully, they will send some things back to us. This could develop into an on-going relationship and might even open some doors for improved international relations. Wouldn’t that be something? We’ll have to wait to see how things turn out.
Betcha you’ll smile …
* I’m in real trouble. First my laundry called and said they lost my shirt. Then my broker called and said the same thing.
* Ancient Egyptians slept on pillows made of stone. That’s actually what killed many of them. Pillow fights.
* I walked into the Dairy Queen the other day and asked for a hot fudge sundae with extra hot fudge. The girl replied, “The hot fudge only comes in one temperature, sir.”
