President’s Message

“We  Serve”

May 2004

President's Message

With the completion of our cheerleading competition and the Easter egg hunt, all of the projects of this Lions year are in the history books. Chairmen, committee members and Lions helpers should all feel proud of what you have accomplished. Our projects do more than raise money and provide service to our community .They also provide examples of what good work service organizations do; and, you never know who might be watching.

An example of what I am talking about took place at our Easter egg hunt in the park just a few weeks ago. One of the fathers was so impressed by our generosity in providing the event for E-town’s children that he talked to Lion Ken Greider and asked about our Club. He was Ken's guest at our last meeting in April. Your may remember meeting Andy Maloney. A few years ago, we gained a new member because we helped his son discover a vision problem at one of our vision screening sessions. Like I said, you just never know who might be watching.

Programs for May

Tuesdav.Mav 11. 6: 15p. m. at the Fire Hall- District Governor Eleanor Reuter will be our guest at this meeting. You may recall that her original "official visit" was scheduled for a meeting in January but a snow storm caused that meeting to be cancelled so this is the re- scheduling of that visit. Lion Eleanor will bring us news from the District and advise us of upcoming events at that level.

Tuesday, Mav 25. 6:15 p. m.. at the Fire Hall- one of our own members Lion Bob Ardner, will present the program at this meeting. Lion Bob will talk about a program he initiated in our community called the "Venture Program." This program, which is a spin-off of the Scouting program, engages young adults in challenging outdoor activities. Lion Bob will bring several guests, and there may even be a demonstration or two. You won't want to miss this one!

Election of Officers

At our meeting on May 11 we will be conducting our annual election of officers for the coming Lions year (July 1,2004 through June 30,2005). Nominees for each position were listed in last month's newsletter. The floor will be open to other nominations prior to the Club voting, but any member so nominated must have agreed to serve if elected. Those elected at this meeting will be installed at the second meeting in June and will begin their term of office on the first day of July.

Greeters

The "official" Greeters for the May 11 meeting will be Lions Keith Perry and Melo Risser, and for the May 25 meeting they will be Lions John Lerch and Chuck Brewer.

Cheerleading Competition

Our annual cheerleading competition brought many changes this year -some expected, and some unexpected. Two of the major planned changes were holding it at the high school rather than the college, and operating the food stand ourselves. These new experiences went quite well. Among the unexpected changes was having a couple of the larger all-star squads call a few days prior to the competition to tell us they would not be keeping their commitment to compete at our event. But, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our co-chairmen, Lions Dennis Kreiner and Dave Mueller, who got on the phones and found replacement squads, the show went on and most folks weren't even aware of the earlier problems. Great work, Lions Denny and Dave. A very large and loud "Thank You!" also goes to all the Lions who helped in any way- and there were many of them -to make the day a successful one. It is too soon to know whether or not the event was successful in raising funds for our charitable activities because not all bills have yet been received. But, even if it wasn't a successful financial event, it certainly was a great experience for the large of young people who competed with their squads, and an enjoyable evening for the many fans who attended. Once more -a big round of applause to Lions Denny and Dave for all their hard work, and to all the members of our Club for providing the skills and dedication to make the whole thing possible. Nice job, Lions!

District Golf Tournament

The District Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, June 24. Lion George Kishbaugh will be coordinating this for our Club. If you would like to participate, contact Lion George prior to the deadline of May 20.

 Lions Yankees Baseball

Opening day for our Lions Yankees and the other Elizabethtown preteen baseball teams was Saturday, April 17. Please support our team by getting to one of their games and talking to the boys. Tell them you are a Lion. Information about E-town Boys Club baseball is available at their web site at http://www.etownboysclub.com/baseball
