President’s Message

March 2004

As your President, I get some phone calls this year that I didn’t get last year.  I had one of them just a few days ago.  It was from a mother who had been notified by her son’s Elizabethtown elementary school that he had failed his vision screening.  In other  words, he needed glasses.  The problem was her husband had his hours cut back at work, and she was not able to work as much as she needed to.  There were other kids in the family with needs and they didn’t have the money to get the eye exam or to buy the glasses.  She said that she was embarrassed to ask, but someone told her to ask our Lions Club for help.  I told her she need not be embarrassed and I referred her to Lion Dale.  I knew we would probably be able to help her.  It was a good feeling to know that. What makes it possible for us to help this mother and all the others who call us over the year?  We can help because we have money in our account.  We have money in our account because we do projects.  We can do projects because we have a club that is 62 members strong.  Need I say more?

Programs for March

Tuesday, March 9, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – It wasn’t long ago that we had the editor of the Elizabethtown Chronicle as our guest speaker.  However, he has recently moved to a new location and the newspaper has new leaders.  These new leaders, Joann Smith and Craig Heisey, will be our presenters at this meeting. They will review the status of the publication under their guidance and be willing to answer questions from our members.

Tuesday, March 23, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – A longtime resident of community was recently elected to the position of Clerk of the Court for Lancaster County.  He is Dale Denlinger, and he will be our guest speaker for this meeting.  He will explain the duties of the position he now holds and will also be willing to answer questions.  This will be an interesting and informative meeting and you won’t want to miss it.

Greeters for this month

The greeters for the meeting on March 9 will be Lion Bob Brain and Lion Dale Williams.  For the meeting on March 23 you will be greeted by Lion John Horst and Lion Charlie Metzger.

Be sure to shake their hands and say hello as you enter the meeting room on these evenings.

 Christmas Party Bill

As we noted in an insert with last month’s newsletter, this month’s issue contains an invoice for each Lion who attended the Family Christmas Party our Club conducted last December.  If you did not attend, of course, there is no statement enclosed with the newsletter.  The Club will be grateful for your prompt remission of this fee.

Past Presidents Meeting

If you are a Past President of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, or a current member of our Club but a Past President of some other Lions Club, or if you are a Vice President of our Club, enclosed with this newsletter is an invitation to attend the annual Past Presidents Meeting to be held March 16.  The details are all stated on the invitation and, as noted there, Lion Dale Williams will be contacting you at the meeting on March 9, or if you miss that meeting he will be phoning you, to see whether or not you plan to attend.

Project Financial Report

The sale of our Elizabethtown Commemorative Ornaments for the year 2003 has now concluded and the final tabulation shows that we earned a profit of $1,238.00 from this project. We still have some 2003 ornaments if anyone asks about them and, if you can sell any, contact Lion Dale Williams and he will see that you receive as many as you need.  This was the first year for this but we plan to continue it in future years, by each year producing a different ornament showing a landmark in our community.  Plans are already underway for this year’s ornament.

The committee for this project, Lions Henri Eberly, George Kishbaugh, Steve Roland, and Dale Williams, thanks you for your support and participation.

Cheerleading Competition

Lions Dennis Kreiner and Dave Mueller have been hard at work putting together all the numerous pieces which need to be in place to hold our annual Cheerleading Competition.  They encountered difficulties in securing the use of the college gymnasium so they have scheduled the Elizabethtown Area High School gymnasium for this year’s event.  The date of the event is now Saturday, April 17 and, as always, we will need assistance from our Club members throughout the entire day and into the late evening hours.  Because there are fewer seats in the high school gym than there are in the college gym, we may need to break the competition into two groups, with one contest being held in the afternoon and one in the evening.  Additionally, for the first time, we will need a committee of Lions to be responsible for the refreshments which will be sold to the spectators.  If you can help with the food area, please contact Lion Dennis or Lion Dave ASAP.

Many details are yet to be ironed out but by the time the next newsletter is published we hope everything is finalized and we will print those details in the April edition of the Lions Ledger.  Although this year’s event promises many changes from our routine of past years, one thing will remain constant – we will need many hours of assistance from our members.  Please reserve Saturday, April 17, on your calendar as a day to contribute your time and energy to this important project.

District Governor’s Visit

As you know, District Governor Eleanor was scheduled to visit our club on January 27.  We had the good silver polished, your president got a fresh haircut, and the red carpet was cleaned.  And then … it snowed!  So, Lion Eleanor will make her official visit on May 11.
