Elizabethtown Lions Club
“We Serve”
July 2004
President’s Message
I first want to thank the Elizabethtown Lions Club for giving me the opportunity to serve as your President. I know it will be quite challenging to preside successfully in this capacity. The only way this can possibly happen is to have each member contribute his/her talents and time in some constructive manner. Our club needs you!
My personal goal will to be to build upon the previous administration of Lion Mike. I feel it is important to increase our membership, but I also would like to see a larger percentage of members at each meeting. I am planning to schedule a program when every member could provide input on this issue and other pertinent topics. In effect, it would be a brainstorming session.
In summary, I have minimal experience in Lionism and I will depend on strong support from our membership. By working together, our Club will continue to play a major role in serving our community.

Welcome New Lions!
At our regular meeting on June 8 we were pleased, and honored, to induct two new members. Joining us that evening were:
Lion Gregory Hitz Lion Andrew Maloney
143 Clover Lane 162 Oak Drive
Elizabethtown, PA 17022 Elizabethtown, PA 17022
Each brings with him a sincere interest in community service and a willingness to assist the rest of us in our efforts to carry out our motto – We Serve. Be sure to introduce yourself to both these new members at your next opportunity. To Lion Greg, and Lion Andy we say “Welcome!”
Dues Adjustment
At the Board meeting on June 8 it was determined that, to simplify the recent increase in International dues, the Club will cover a small portion of the increase for each member. The final plan is for each member to be charged a total of $128.00 in dues for the entire year. That covers the local, state, and international dues, AND pays $2.50 of your meal costs at each of our regular Club meetings. (The meal actually costs $10.50 but we pay just $8.00 on the night of the meeting.) As in the past, you may pay the total amount with one check in July, or be billed for $32.00 each quarter. Lion George Kishbaugh will assume you want to continue on the payment plan you used last year unless you notify him otherwise.
Our District Governor alerted us to expect minor increases in international dues in each of the next two years, but our Board will do its best to minimize the impact of any such increases on the members.
Meetings in July
Remember … there will be NO regular meetings this month. The next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, August 10, at 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall.
B-I-N-G-O
Be there.
I – hope you will help us. OK, that’s a bit of a reach, but you get point, right?)
N – it isn’t difficult to do.
Gee – that wasn’t bad at all.
Oh – by the way, I had fun doing it.
Lion Chris Metzler and his committee have been working hard to make all the necessary arrangements for another successful week in our tent at the E-town Fair. We will be operating the Bingo games Monday, August 23 through Saturday, August 28, from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. each evening except Wednesday. On Wednesday we will begin at 5:00 p.m. for “Seniors Bingo”.
The “work” is extremely easy but we do need at least 6-8 Lions at all times we are open, so please contact Lion Chris (367-7363) ASAP to let him know which nights you will help. The schedule can be adjusted to fit you in whenever, and as often as, you are available. Something new has been added to our plans this year – your wife/significant other is welcome to come out and lend a hand, also, if she is willing. Just let Lion Chris know. One final note … set-up (Sunday, Aug. 22) and tear-down (Sunday, Aug. 29) are additional times when help is needed. Both days we will meet at the tent at 1:00 p.m. This is a little more strenuous work, but tasks which obviously need to be done, so if you can handle a little bit of lifting and carrying, please come out to help with this work, also.

Why We Do What We Do …. Ever wonder why we Lions work so hard to do what we do? In the Lions year just ended we purchased eye exams and glasses for a number of E-town residents, both children and adults, who were not financially able to get them without our help. We sponsored our Lion Yankees pre-teen baseball team for the 53rd consecutive year. We conducted an Easter Egg Hunt for area children. We helped sponsor the Frantz-Reider-Yohe Football Awards. We gave graduation awards to numerous Elizabethtown High School seniors. We sent $2000.00 to our Elizabethtown Public Library. We sent money to FASE, an emergency fund at Elizabethtown College to help their needy students, as well as meet local student emergency needs, regardless of what college they are attending. We sponsored a 16-year old student from the local high school to attend the District 14-D Youth Camp for a week. These are some of the things we did around Elizabethtown.
We also supported people outside of Elizabethtown. We sent $1000.00 to the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. We supported eye research at the Hershey School of Medicine. We provided a campership for a blind person to Beacon Lodge this summer. We supported Bosh Lesher’s Ride for Sight. We supported diabetes awareness programs, Leader Dog, Four Diamonds Fund, hearing research, the Helen Keller Emergency Fund, Kidsight/Worksight, LCIF, Northeast PA Lions
Eye Bank, and the PA Lions Foundation.
In addition to all the charitable work listed here, we also have a good time when we are together. So, by all of us “pulling together” we can accomplish all these things. That’s Why We Do What We Do!

* I used to watch golf on TV during the weekend, but my Doctor told me I needed to get more exercise.
So now I watch tennis.
