January 2005

President’s Message

I am happy to report that our culminating activity for the year 2004 ; went rather well. The Christmas Banquet provided something for everyone. Santa delivered his joy to the children and Marino once again provided a joyous musical background during the dinner and led the singing of Christmas Carols. Lion Jerry and helpers did their usual good job along with Lion Dave and his poinsettias.

We are now preparing to swing into the New Year. There is still work to be done. A major thrust continues to be the various facets of membership. We are always looking to add good people as well as increasing our percentage of attendance at each meeting. There are also some specific needs like adding another Chaplain to our ranks. Lion Gary has been doing a stellar job in this capacity, but he will be heading to Florida for a few months.

I still feel our cause would be enhanced by adding some ladies to our roster .Perhaps you could discuss this matter with your spouses or significant other and see what develops. I talked briefly to Lion John Lerch's wife, Jennifer, after our last meeting and she seemed receptive to the idea. I know her well from her days as a top student at Donegal.

Our next meeting is going to be a big one. It will be our annual quad meeting with E-town serving as host. There will also be the possibility that our District's Vice Governor, John McIntyre, will be attending. I hope our Club will be well represented.

Programs for January

Two interesting programs have been lined up for our meetings this month. They are. ..

January 11. 2005.6f15 p.m. at the Fire Hall- This program will .be of special interest to those of us who are getting a little older (and who isn't doing that?) and are noticing some changes in our vision. Our guess speaker this evening will be Dr. Barton L. Halpern, M.D, a well-known ophthalmologist in our area. Dr. Halpern will explain to us some of the latest techniques being used in such things as lasik surgery and cataract surgery, as well as the newer treatments for glaucoma. Following his presentation, he will answer some questions from the audience. This will be a very interesting, and valuable, program and you won't want to miss it.

As was noted earlier in this newsletter, this meeting will also be the annual Quad-Club meeting and our Club will serve as the host Club this year. Our guests will be the Lions from the Conoy Lions Club, the Marietta Lions Club, and the Mount Joy Lions Club. Let's be sure we have the most members in attendance!

Tuesday. January 25. 2005. 6: 15 p.m. at the fire Hall- Not far from where we live is a unique national museum and, sadly, many of the residents from our area have never visited it. It is the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia. At this meeting we will have representatives from this special attraction share with us some of the background behind the creation of this museum, and tell us about some of the rare timepieces which are located there. After hearing about this place you will want to visit it.

Nice Work

Congratulations go out to Lion Jerry Lorson and his committee for the terrific job they did in handling the annual Family Christmas Party we all enjoyed last month. As usual, everything went smoothly and all in attendance: had an enjoyable evening. It would be nice if we could thank Santa for his work at the Party also, but of course, he: is back at the North Pole now.

Happy Anniversary

With this edition, we are beginning our sixth year of publishing the Lions Ledger in its current format. Over the years there have been various styles of newsletters used by our Club but the style currently in use, the one you are reading now, first came out in January 2000. The editor will always remember this-61st issue because of how it; was prepared: You-see, a couple days prior to writing this newsletter, the editor's computer had a major hiccup, which resulted in the loss of the cursor from the screen just vanished. Despite the application of his very limited computer technology skills, he was unable to retrieve the cursor. Wow!  If you want to have a frustrating experience sometime, try preparing a document on your computer without the use of the mouse. It can be done, but it isn't very pleasant. So, for the editor, this has been a newsletter to remember

Today's Chuckles

* While attending his high school class re1n1ion. a fellow approached a woman he thought he recognized. "You look like Helen Brown," he said. Without hesitation she shot back, "Oh yeah? Well, you don't look so good in blue, either!"

                * I'd much rather work in New York than Los Angles. For one thing, you get paid three hours earlier.
