President’s Message
February 2004
With winter wind and freezing temperatures, it is hard to think that spring is just around the corner, but it is. Groundhog or no groundhog. The Past Presidents’ meeting is in the final planning stage, Lion Bill is thinking about nominations for his year, the cheerleading competition committee is hard at work and some of Lion Jay’s laying hens are practicing to get ready for the Easter egg hunt. In other words, the end of this Lions year is approaching very, very quickly.
We have accomplished a lot so far his year with profitable projects, good fellowship, great attendance at meetings – both at home and abroad – generous participation in projects, lots of publicity, a web page about to be launched and a net growth in membership. And our newsletter continues to be first class.
Speaking of membership (and you know I would), our Club currently has 62 Lions, up from 59 at the end of the last Lions year. Our goal for the year is an increase of 12 members. We need 9 more new members, or two per month till the end of the year in June. A few years ago we took in fifteen new members in one year, so I know we can do it. Four more Lions will get us up to 66 and back into the large club class (where we were until last year, and where we ought to be). However, nine more members will make us very healthy for the future. As I said, the end of this Lions Year is coming very, very quickly.

Programs for February
We finally return to our “normal” meeting schedule this month, and the programs which have been planned for both meetings focus on youth, and what is being done to assist some young people who have unique needs.
Tuesday, February 10, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – A representative from Teen Challenge International will be our presenter this evening. This world-wide program serves addicted teenagers and operates a branch in Rehrersburg, PA. The speaker will address the “what, why, and how” of their program and will entertain questions at the conclusion.
Tuesday, February 24, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – A youth program in our own back yard will be the topic for this meeting. Mr. “Buzz” Cash, Director of the Masonic Village Children’s Home, will use a power point presentation to inform us of how their program is meeting the special needs of approximately 40 young people. Our own Club provides several different kinds of services to young folks in our community – this is one of the goals of Lionism – so it will be interesting to hear about the work of other organizations striving to assist the next generation of Americans, also. You won’t want to miss either of these programs.
District Governor’s Visit
Due to the inclement weather we experienced on January 27, forcing the cancellation of our regularly scheduled meeting, District Governor Eleanor’s official visit to our Club will need to be rescheduled. Lion President Mike will work with Lion Eleanor to find a time when our schedule, and her schedule, can accommodate her being with us.
Greeters for February
February 10 – Lions Frank Telenko and Harry Reed
February 24 – Lions Marty Risser and Phil Daubert
Ornament Call-In
The sale of our 2003 Elizabethtown Commemorative Ornaments has now concluded. All unsold ornaments, and money, has been collected from the merchants who assisted us with this project so, now, all we need is to do the same for our Club members. If you are still holding any unsold ornaments, and/or any money from the sale of these, please return both to Lion Dale Williams at our meeting on February 10. The project for this year can then be closed, and a report given to the membership.
Attention Past Presidents
The annual Past Presidents meeting will be held Tuesday, March 16 (the third Tuesday).Plans for this dinner meeting are being finalized and will be announced in next month’s newsletter but, for now, if you have ever served as President of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, or are currently a member of our Club but served as President of any other Lions Club, mark the date on your calendar and plan to join us that evening.

A Little Punishment
Do you know that people tend to tell worse puns as they get older? That’s why they call them groan-ups. As proof, here are some examples . . .
* A very nervous man became an investment broker. Whenever there was bad news about a company he held shares in, his nervousness would make his feet begin to sweat profusely. It’s apparently a common trait in investment circles – bad news makes your socks stink.
* Just as a surgeon was finishing up an operation and was about to close, the patient awakes, sits up, and demands to know what is going on. “I’m about to close,” the surgeon says. The patient grabs the surgeon’s hand and says, “I’m not going to let you do that! I’ll close my own incision! The doctor hands him the thread and says, “Suture self.”
* A retired astronaut opened an unsuccessful restaurant on the moon. The food was great but there was no atmosphere.
