Lions Ledger

President’s Message

December 2003

In the few weeks prior to Christmas, the idea of giving suddenly becomes a popular theme.  The television commercials remind us to make sure we buy things to give our family and friends.  Our mailboxes are filled with pleas from organizations and charities.  Empty bags are hung on our doors to be filled with food items and returned.  Representatives are out at the malls asking, in person, for our support.  We Lions, however, do not need this seasonal reminder to be givers.

The men and women who make up our Club are very special, giving people.  Just look around you at our next meeting.  You will see active church members.  You will see officials of local government commissions.  You will see volunteer youth athletic coaches.  You will see Scout leaders.  You will see model train buffs who share their hobby with the public at Christmas.  You will see musicians who give free concerts.  The list is long and distinguished.  I consider Elizabethtown Lions Club membership to be one of the best gifts I have been given.  Maybe you do too.  Merry Christmas.

Lion Mike

Welcome, Lion Bob!

We welcome into our Club Lion Bob Ardner, who became our newest member at the regular meeting on November 25.  Lion Bob, his wife Kay, and their family have been residents of Elizabethtown for a number of years.  Among the numerous ways Lion Bob has contributed to our community is as a long-time leader in Boy Scouts.  Be sure to greet our newest member at our next meeting.

December Meetings

Because this month’s meetings are both on “off” nights for our Club, we announced the schedule in the November Lions Ledger but a reminder here is in order.

Thursday, December 4, 6:30 p.m., at the General Sutter Inn in Lititz – this will be a joint meeting with the Lititz Lions Club and the Columbia Lions Club.  The program will be the annual Football Awards Banquet where the three Clubs honor the outstanding high school football players from each of the three Sections in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.  The roast beef dinner will cost you $8.00 at the door that night.  Mike Hostetler, from WGAL Channel 8, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.  We will form carpools from the parking lot of the Lutheran Church on East High Street at 5:30 p.m.

Tuesday, December 16, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – The annual Lions Family Christmas Party will be held this evening.  There will be delicious food, joyful laughter, excited children, pleasant music, and, of course, Santa will be stopping by with presents for children who have been pre-registered contact Lion Jerry Lorson if you haven’t given him the names and ages of any children you will be bringing to the Party).

Greeters for December

Because we will be “off site” for the December 4 meeting, there will be no assigned Greeters for that evening.  However, greeting you and your family when you arrive for the Party on December 16 will be Lions Bill Earhart and Glen Leib.

Pie Sale Concluded

Congratulations to Lions Joe Ditzler and Barney Meyer for conducting another successful Pie Sale this year.  The members of our Club sold more than 800 pies and we realized a profit of approximately $1600.00 for the effort.  Obviously, without the work of all our members, and the leadership of Lions Joe and Barney, this would not have been possible.  Due to other local organizations now running pie sales at the same time we hold ours, we may need to look for ways to change this project for next year but, for now, the word is “Congratulations!” Lions.

Another “Heads Up”

Our first meeting of the new year will be held on another “off night” for us.  This will be the traditional Quad-Club Meeting and will be held on the first Tuesday of January, January 6, which is the regular meeting night of the host Club.  The gathering of the Lions from Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Marietta, and the Conoy Lions will be held at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy beginning at 6:30 p.m.  We will carpool from the Lutheran Church parking lot on East High Street at 5:45 p.m.  A sign-up sheet will be passed at our December meetings.  Cost of the meal to members will be the usual $8.00 which will be collected the night of the meeting.  Since we need to call in a count by December 30, we will have to bill you if you sign up and have to cancel after that date.

The Dreaded “S” Word Whether or not you believe the woolly caterpillar or the Old Farmers Almanac, chances are we will have some snow this winter.  If we have a significant storm on any of our winter season meeting nights and it is necessary to cancel a meeting, the Lions Club phone chain (see pp. 18-

19 in this year’s Yellow Book) will be activated prior to the meeting to give you timely notice.

Smiles

*A Sunday school teacher asked her class, “What was Jesus’ mother’s name?”  One child answered,“Mary.”  The teacher then asked, “Who knows what Jesus’ father’s name was?”  A little guy answered, “Verge.”  Confused, the teacher asked, “Where did you get that?”  The little fellow said, “Well, you know they are always talking about Verge n’ Mary.”

*A tourist asks a man in uniform, “Are you a policeman?”  “No, I’m an undercover detective.”  “So why are you in uniform?”  “Today is my day off.”

*“He’s great on the court,” a sportswriter said of a college basketball player in an interview with his

Coach. “But how’s his scholastic work?”  “Why, he makes straight A’s,” replied the coach.      “Wonderful,” said the sportswriter.  “Yes,” agreed the coach, “but his B’s are a little crooked.”From the entire staff at the offices of the Lions Ledger, to you and your family …

Merry  Christmas, and a Happy New Year !
