“We  Serve”

AUGUST  2004

President’s Message

I find it difficult to realize how rapidly this year is rolling along. The height of the corn in the fields is a true indicator that our harvest season is fast approaching.  We are quickly reminded that the E-town Fair and Bingo will soon be upon us.  Lion Chris and his crew are planning and working diligently to prepare for this important Lion activity.  He will need strong support, however, from everyone during the Fair week.

I am looking forward to another good year for our Club.  Mostly everything is falling in line on a positive note.  New Lions Greg and Andy have volunteered to serve on appropriate committees.  Lion Glen has told me that he is lining up several potential new members.  The committees are well organized with a few exceptions.  We will need someone to replace Lion Dean as White Cane chairperson.  His job responsibilities prevent his continuing in that capacity. Lion Dale would appreciate if different people would work with him on the Football Awards and the Ornament project committees this year and then assume chairperson responsibilities the following year.  I am sure these needs will be dealt with successfully in the near future.

I hope to see everyone on August 10th.  I feel it is important to have a strong showing at every meeting.

Meetings in August

Tuesday, August 10, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – We Lions know about Boys Club pre-teen baseball through our sponsorship of the Lion Yankees team.  At this meeting we will welcome Spencer Heisey, President of the Elizabethtown Boys Club, who will fill us in on what is happening in Boys Club basesball, football, wrestling, cheerleading and the other good things that the Elizabethtown Boys Club does for the youth of our community.  He will also tell us what is in the works to expand and improve the playing fields for our kids.  Attend this meeting and be “brought up to speed” about this important aspect of life in our town.

Fair Week, August 23-28 – There will be no “regular” meeting of the Club during this week. Rather than hold a meeting, we will be working at the Bingo tent at the Fair. (See related story on the other side of this newsletter.)

B-I-N-G-O

Last month’s Lions Ledger carried an article titled “WWDWWD” – Why We Do What We Do.  In it were listed many of the charitable activities to which our Club contributed money during the past twelve months, and numerous other community organizations and individuals to whom we provided financial support last year.  That’s what we do – WE SERVE.  However, we won’t be able to provide such support for this year’s needs if we don’t earn some money.  That’s why we operate the Bingo stand at the Elizabethtown Fair.  That is just one of the ways, but an extremely important one, in which we earn money which will be given away later in the year to needy causes and individuals. Lion Chris Metzler and his committee have been working on the many preparations which are required to run this project.  Now, all they need is for each member who is able to contribute some time and effort during Fair Week.  The tasks to be done are very easy and there are no “requirements” regarding the amount of time you can help – any time you can contribute toward this event will be welcomed and appreciated.

We will need assistance every evening beginning Monday, August 23 through Saturday, August 28.  If you haven’t already contacted Lion Chris regarding your available time, please do so ASAP.  We will need help (the more the merrier) from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. each of the six nights of the Fair. Oh, and did we mention that the pay is terrific?  Not in terms of dollars, of course, but in the satisfaction of knowing you are helping meet the needs of someone less fortunate than yourself.  As the TV ad says, “Priceless.”

Pot Quiz!

To make sure you’re keeping up with your summer reading assignments, we will now give you our second vocabulary quiz.  The first quiz appeared in the May issue of the Lions Ledger and, frankly, some of your scores were … well … let’s just say they were disappointing.

So here’s your chance to bring up your grade.  Match the word in the first column with its meaning in the second column.

Watch out for that dreaded “furniture disease.”  That’s when your chest falls into your drawers.

*   I used to be stupid, but I’ve turned that around 360 degrees.

It was a lot more fun driving a car in the early days when the crank was in front of the engine.

If people weren’t meant to have midnight snacks, why do they put a light in the refrigerator?

In just two days tomorrow will be yesterday.
