“We Serve
September 2007
President's Message
Just like the August weather, our Club activities started heating up after a brief respite in July. We had a great time socializing over Enck’s burgers, dogs, chicken and other delicious picnic fare at our resurrected Lions Club Picnic. Thanks to Lion Dave for adding the lighter fare with some guessing games (Lion Mike R. – 60 lb. watermelon – really?) and a new crowd pleaser, Hillbilly Golf. Interest in a tournament anyone? Thanks also to Lion Joe for championing the idea of bringing back the picnic and making it a success this year.
Not sure if it was El Nino, La Nina, Global Warming or what, but WOW, what weird weather for the Fair! That was the first time in more than eight years I can remember that many days of foul weather during Fair Week. The Chairman of the Bingo Committee even got sick on Wednesday! In spite of it all, our Lions put in a tremendous effort, epitomized by Lion Dale W. and his crew who refused to cower to Mother Nature’s bad side on Saturday night by not abandoning the tent as the cold front blew through! He did admit to being “a little concerned” with all the wind and lightning and tent flapping when he suddenly became aware the Ferris Wheel was right beside them! Thanks to all the Lions who helped out and especially Lion Chris for his organization of this critical fund raiser.
This was a busy time for Lion Chris, not only because of the Fair, but he also managed to strong arm his graphic design students into printing our new Yellow Books. That’s right, it’s hot off the presses and if you did not get one at the Picnic, I will have them at future meetings (for a small fee, Tail Twister?).
Things don’t slow down either as we switch gears into the Car Cruise and Chicken Bar-B-Que September 8th. This is our second largest fund raiser for the year and continues to grow. It is a good time working with your fellow Lions and fun to watch all the vintage and sup’d –up cars go by at registration. Literally a surprise around every corner! This would make a great time to bring a guest by to see what Lions do outside of the regular meetings, so if you have someone in mind, bring them by and let’s get to know them!
Attention GOLFERS: Lion Leonard Smith, the District Governor, has laid down a challenge to all you duffers. Beat the Governor at Golf Contest (50/50 drawing) between now and April 18th and you have the chance to win 50% of all the $5.00 challenges paid out during that time. You even get to pick the course! Talk about home field advantage! If this sounds fun, call Lion Leonard (he’s in the Yellow Book) and accept the challenge. I’ll have more details at the next meeting.
One last thought with no disrespect intended to Lions Bob, Gary, Bill, etc. However, “Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?” If you are like me, thank goodness for football season – even if the Phillies are making it interesting!
See you on the 8th, and 11th, if not before.
Lion Dean
Programs for September Meetings
Tuesday, September 11, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – Lion Ron Peters will be the guest speaker at this meeting.
He is a Past District Governor and the district chair for Campaign Sight First II. Ron will give a presentation regarding this world-wide project being offered by Lions International. The information he presents will aid our Club in determining how we want to get involved in this project.
Tuesday, September 25, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – A special treat awaits you at this meeting. Our guest will be Mr. David Cavanaugh. Dave retired in 2003 after a 20-year career as a Special Agent with the FBI. He was assigned to the New York Field Office during the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 2001 and he will share his thoughts and experiences from participating in that investigation. You won’t want to miss this one!
Thank You
Although President Dean expressed appreciation to all the Lions (and friends) who worked at the Bingo tent this year, it bears repeating here. Our Club, along with all the other organizations who operated a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair this year, will find their bottom line to be less than they had hoped, because the inclement weather kept the crowds down. That’s unfortunate, but on the bright side, we DID make a profit (exact figures are not yet known), we DID have fun running the Bingo games, and we DID favorably represent the Lions Club within our community. So, in spite of the unpleasant weather throughout most of the week, the numerous Lions who gave of their time and effort can take satisfaction because we, once again, showed that Lions are “good people, doing good things, and having a good time doing it.” A very large THANK YOU to everyone who assisted with this project!
