President's Message
I want to begin with a disclaimer. I know the last newsletter stated some things would happen at the August 8 meeting that did not happen namely, that the Yellow Book and our new Lions shirts would be available at that meeting. However, please understand the information in that newsletter, in this one, and in future ones, is the best information known at the time it is written. I did not mean to misinform or disappoint anyone but the good-natured teasing I endured at that meeting added to the enjoyment of the evening. Thanks, Lions (I think!) J
The primary election this past May is infamous as it caused a shake-up of our state government. You probably noticed a change in our Lions Club, too. After many years of service as our Club treasurers, Lions Paul Lesoine and George Kishbaugh have decided to step down. That office is one of the more demanding ones with the Club and we thank Paul and George for their good work. Lions Bob Ulmer and Chuck Shaffner are the new treasurers for the Club and we thank them for agreeing to serve in that capacity.
We asked for a three year commitment from Bob and Chuck as treasurers. Placing a time limit on serving in an office helps to get Lions to serve in that office because they know they won't be "stuck in the position forever" but it also means more Lions are going to be needed to serve in that office. That's where all members of the Club need to get involved. Every year vacancies for offices need to be filled. If you've served in the past, thank you and please consider serving again. If you haven't yet served, please consider doing so. At the beginning of each calendar year the incoming president begins to fill his slate of officers so it's not too early to consider how you might help. Thanks, and I look forward to voting for you someday.
The last part of my message is for members' wives or girlfriends, so read no further and hand this newsletter to your spouse or significant other.
Hello, my name is Joe Ditzler and I recently became Lions Club President; so recent, in fact, that I just conducted my first meeting in August. At that meeting when I chose the order by table that the Lions would enter the dinner line (one of the many important decisions I made that night), I overlooked the one female who was present at the meeting a young lady who was visiting. I was immediately told by many Lions about my mistake in not letting this young lady be at the head of the line. Why am I telling you this? Because you need to know, as I quickly found out that evening, that chivalry is alive and well with the men of the Elizabethtown Lions Club. Your husband wants you to go first insist that you do. He'll gladly help carry in groceries or fold the wash just let him know when it needs done. You should never open a door again when you're with him. "Yes Dear," "Certainly Dear," and "Right away Dear" are phrases I know you'll hear often. I hope this helps with communication and understanding. Thanks for your time. You can now give this letter back to your Lion (what a guy). I'd appreciate you not discussing what I've written with him, OK?
That's all for now, Lions. I hope to see you at the September meetings.
Lion Joe
Our NEXT Big Project
With Bingo now behind us, it is time to focus our attention on the next important project for our Club. That, of course, is the Car Cruise. By now you know the date is Saturday, September 9, and the time help will be needed is 7:00 a.m. until mid-afternoon. The location will be the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. Registration for exhibitors begins at 8:00 a.m. and the show begins at 9:00 and runs through 1:00 p.m. There is no admission charge for those who wish to come out to see all the fine vehicles on exhibit that day and we are expecting a large turnout from the public as the show has been advertised widely.
In addition to the cars and trucks on display that day, we will also be selling barbecued chicken a half chicken for $4.00, and a full dinner for $6.50 and there will be music, 50-50 drawings, other give-a-ways, and lots of fun for the entire family.
Lions members are needed to help with registration, direct the placing of the show vehicles, and assist with all the other little details that need to be done in a project like this. Steve Roland, Glen Leib and Keith Perry, the Car Cruise committee, have done a splendid job of organizing this show and, trust me, there is a ton of work done ahead of the cruise date so all that is needed now is for our members to show up on September 9 to help out a little. As with all our projects, nobody is expected to work all day (unless they choose to do so) and if enough Lions come out to help, no one will be asked to do too much. We will not have a regular Club meeting before September 9 so, if you have not already informed the committee when you will be available to help, please do so by contacting one of them now (Steve 361-9112, Glen 367-4002, and Keith 367-7346).
This is another project where the Elizabethtown Lions Club is "on display" in our community. Let's make sure the residents are shown what a great Club we are!
Future Meeting Location
Due to the fire which occurred at the Fire Hall in July, and the time it will require to repair it, we will not be able to hold our meetings there until January 2007. At least that is the projected date. Of course, it may change as things progress (or don't). So, until further notice,
our regular Club meetings will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Our thanks to John Lerch for helping to secure this arrangement, and to the church Trustees for permitting it.
Great Work, Lions!
Although we do not yet have the final numbers, it appears the Bingo project at the Fair was very successful. It was terrific to see the number of members who werewilling to give a few hours to this effort to assure its success. Congratulations to ChrisMetzler, Bingo Chairman, and his committee for their work on this endeavor. Not onlydid we earn some money for our charitable purposes, but we received a lot of public
exposure in the community. Projects like this make us a better, stronger Club, and show the residents of Elizabethtown (and surrounding areas) that the Lions are alive and well, and contributing to our community in meaningful ways. Nice job, all!
District Governor's Goals
As you know, each year the Governor of District 14-D selects a number of needy and deserving places to which the District contributes financial support. What you may not know is that our Club donated $4158.00 last year to the various District Governor's Goals. If you want to know more specifics about exactly where this money went, contact our Club president, secretary or treasurer. This is just one more example of how "We Serve."
Shirts and Yellow Books
We are hopeful that the Yellow Books will be ready for distribution at our first meeting this month and, if you ordered but have not yet received a new Lions shirt, it too should be available at our meeting on September 12. We expect there will be extra shirts for members who did not previously order one. President Joe tells us the fashion world is abuzzzz over these new bimini blue, properly trimmed and labeled shirts. He also asked the editor of the newsletter to tell the members that if you like the shirt be sure to give him the credit and, if you don't like them, blame it on Dean Dochterman, Dale Williams and Barney Myer because Dean and Dale chose the color, and Barney selected the style. J Either way, $25.00 will get you your very own shirt (and, hey, didn't they look spiffy at the Bingo tent?!). Shirts should be available at the next few Club meetings.
Programs for September
Tuesday, September 12, 6:15 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church a leader of the local Boy Scouts, Mike Lesoine (yes, it is Paul's son), will be our guest speaker at this meeting. He will be informing us about the scouting efforts in our community and will answer questions you may have about it. You will want to hear about this important program so don't miss this meeting.
Tuesday, September 26, 6:15 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with the football season in full swing by this time, it seems appropriate that we should have a coach as our guest for this meeting, and we do. Coach Andy Louck, head football coach at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (Stevens Tech to most of us), will join us to enlighten us about the program he directs and share some stories from his
experiences there. This promises to be an enjoyable evening!
Greeters for September
For the meeting on September 12 Jay Greider and Ken Greider
For the meeting on September 26 Phil Daubert and Bill Earhart
District Golf Tournament
Lions District 14-D will be holding their annual golf tournament on September 8 at the Fairview golf course in Quentin (Lebanon County). Details are available on the District web site or from our Club secretary.
How 'bout a Small Chuckle
* A bum asked a businessman, "Give me $10.00 till pay day." The businessman asked, "Well, when is
pay day?" The bum said, "I don't know. You're the one that's working!"
* A man walked into the bar and ordered a drink and the bartender said, "I thought you quit drinking."
The man says, "No, I just wanted to cut my drinking in half, so I joined A."
* When I was a child I remember my Mother telling me, "Son, when you grow up you can marry any girl
you please." When I became a young man I learned the sad fact that I could not please any of them.
