President’s Message

Great fellowship and entertainment is what I am looking forward to on November 10th at the Region V Rally.  Remember, this takes the place of the regular meeting on November 8th.  We then return to the Fire Hall on November 22nd for the big PIE night.  I hope everyone has convinced friends and family to postpone their diets and buy pies!  The pie sale is a vital fund raiser for our Club.  But if they don't take a pie they surely will buy an ornament!  Some are better than others at sales, but this year's ornament and pies will sell themselves if you just show them to people … they are that good!  Lastly, I just left the meeting of the Football Awards Banquet Committee.  On Thursday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m., at the General Sutter Inn in Lititz, the Lions Clubs from Columbia, Elizabethtown, and Lititz will honor the top football players in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. I hope to have a good turnout to support this event.  A sign-up sheet will be provided at our regular Club meeting on November 22.  Hope to see you and your prospective Lion guest at one of these great events!

White Cane Day

Lion Andy Maloney, who served as Chairman of the White Cane Day project we conducted last month, has reported that our efforts that week-end resulted in donations of $1070.00.  Lion Andy has calculated that contributions were received at a rate of better than $30.00 per hour – and this at a time when nationally we hear talk of "donor fatigue."  That seems to indicate that local residents recognize the importance of the White Cane drive, and are willing to support it with their money.  Congratulations go out to Lion Andy for spearheading this effort, and to all the members of our Club who donated their time to make it happen.  Of course, these donations will go to provide assistance to the blind and visually impaired.

Pie Sale

The enclosed flyer about the Pie Sale is self explanatory.  Please read it carefully, paying close attention to the timelines.  This is an important fund-raiser for our Club so please do your part by selling these delicious pies to your friends and relatives.  They will thank you for it.

Programs for November

Tuesday, November 8 – NO MEETING (see the President's Message above)

Tuesday, November 22, 6:15 p.m., at the Fire Hall – We have special entertainment planned for this meeting.  Tim Zeager, of Lakeland, Florida, will visit.  Tim is a pastor and music director and sings professionally.  Tim is the son of Lion Sam, and Joy Zeager.  As a student at EAHS Tim gained notoriety by participating in numerous musical productions as well a band and orchestra groups.  Join us this evening and enjoy this fine musical entertainment.

 Greeters for November

When you enter the Fire Hall for our meeting on November 22, you will be greeted by Lions Don Berry and Jay Greider.   (No greeters will be needed at the Region V Rally on November 10.)

Holiday Parade

For many years Elizabethtown has conducted a Holiday Parade to kick-off  the Holiday season in our community.  Many groups and organizations participate in this annual event, but our Club has never had a presence in this widely watched activity – until now!  This year, if we can get enough members to represent the Club, we will be in the parade.  Although all details were not yet finalized when this newsletter went to press, here's what we do know:

                                    Date:  Friday, December 2

Time:  Meet on College Avenue (exact location TBA) by 6:00 p.m.

Distance:  Parade route is approximately one and a half miles long

More information:  To be provided at our meeting on Nov. 22

Our hope is that we will have enough members volunteer to be in the parade so that our Club will gain "visibility" in the community, perhaps generate interest resulting in new members, and simply show that the Lions are an important part of our community.  Since this is our first attempt at being in the parade, there are numerous details to be worked out and, naturally, much will depend on how many members volunteer to participate.  Come to our meeting on November 22 to learn the details, and sign up to join the "Lions on Parade".

Helping Our Own

Occasionally a member of our Club, or a member of his immediate family, finds he has a need to go somewhere – to a Doctor's appointment, to a pharmacy to pick up medications, to get to a grocery store, to take care of an important task, etc. – but lacks transportation to get where he needs to go. This is where we can be of service to our fellow Lion.  Many members of our Club can be available, even on short notice, to provide such transportation but perhaps the person in need does not know who to call for assistance.  So, to address this problem, we are considering establishing a "Transportation Resource" listing of all members of our Club who would be willing to provide this service for a fellow Lion.  This issue will be discussed at our next regular meeting, on November 22, so please plan to be there to give your input to this new concept.  The level of interest shown that evening will determine if, and how, this new service will be established.

Football Awards Banquet

Before the next Lions Ledger is published, the annual Football Awards Banquet will be held (see the President's Message on the other side).  This is one of the highlights of our year and is an excellent example of three Lions Clubs working together to conduct a special event.  These nights are always a good time and you won't want to miss it this year, so mark your calendar for

Thursday, December 1, 6:30 p.m. at the General Sutter Inn in Lititz , then come to the meeting on November 22 to register your intention to attend.
