JUNE 2009
Programs for June
Tuesday, June 9, 6:15 p .m. at the Fire Hall – Have you ever wanted to visit the Canadian Rockies? Well, Jack Frank will take us there (in a manner of speaking) at this meeting. He will be showing scenes from his visit to these majestic mountains and will share some of his experiences from that trip. In addition to this “travelogue,” we will have the election of Officers for the 2009~2010 Lions Year.
Tuesday, June 23, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – Dr. Joseph Rebman will be with us for this meeting and will share some of his experiences from a recent trip to Central America where he helped provide those residents with improved vision and eye care. Dr. Rebman supports our Club’s efforts to provide eye glasses to needy individuals in our area by donating his professional time and skills, and providing the eyeglasses at minimal cost to us.
This meeting will also include the installation of our Club’s officers for next year.
Lions Club Awards
On May 18 the Elizabethtown Area High School held its annual Senior Awards Night at which local students received recognition and awards for many of their accomplishments throughout their high school careers. For a very long time our Club has been a part of these ceremonies and this year was no exception.
Our Club gave $200.00 checks and nice plaques to:
Business Student … Benjamin Grabowski
Jane Hoover Award (female athlete) … Rebecca Bigler
P. H. Daubert Award (male athlete) … Shane Rosenberry
In addition, we presented a plaque to the Most Outstanding Senior Girl, and the Most Outstanding Senior Boy, in each of the interscholastic sports offered at the local high school. A total of 27 plaques were awarded to these individuals.
Needed: Web Master
Our Club for the past five years has maintained a web site on the internet. Mike Myers has maintained this site the entire time but he is now requesting relief from that responsibility. If you have even a small amount of understanding the web, you could do this job for the Club, and Mike will assist with the instruction to get you started. If you are the person who can provide this service, please contact Mike or any Club officer to advise them of your willingness to help the Club in this way. It is not really a big job, but we need help now. Can you? Will you?
Major Donation
At the meeting of the Board of Directors on May 26 our first contribution to Lions International’s “Campaign Sight First II” was approved for payment. This is a donation of approximately $4800.00 and is the first of five such annual donations. This is a world-wide effort by Lions to eradicate River Blindness, a major cause of blindness in Africa, but a condition which is totally preventable if the people are educated about its cause, and receive proper treatment for it.
Since blindness prevention and sight preservation are major goals of Lions Clubs around the world, we chose to be a Model Club in this program. Of course, it will be a challenge for us to raise sufficient funds each year to meet our commitment to CSF II as well as all our other obligations on a more local level, which is why it is important for us to be energetic and creative in our fund-raising efforts throughout the year.
Car Cruise
The Car Cruise Committee has been working very hard to prepare for this year’s event and they continue to look for additional help from our members. This is a big event and one which requires a large amount of work preparing for the day so if you can spare some time, please contact any member of the Committee to see how you can assist.
Greeters for June Meetings
For the meeting on June 9 – Joe Ditzler and Paul Lesoine
For the meeting on June 23 – Dale Williams and Erma Zimmerman
New Project Completed
In May our Club participated in the first “Popcorn Festival” held in Mount Joy. This event was sponsored by the Mt. Joy Rotary and we ran the Bingo “tent” (actually a pavilion). It is a much smaller event than the Elizabethtown Fair, and our facility was not nearly as large as our Fair tent, so our profit from the three nights was just $180.00 but it was a very easy project to conduct and we operated for only a total of nine hours. In addition to the profit, we gained “recognition” in a different setting than our own community, and provided an enjoyable activity for a number of individuals. It is likely some of the folks who played at this Festival will come to the Fair and play in our tent there.
Special thanks goes to Chris Metzler who headed this project, and to those members who assisted with this effort.
ATTENTION
There will be NO regular Club meetings in July.
The Lions Ledger will not be published in July and, due to vacation schedules, the August issue will come out in late July rather than the first week in August.
Coming Up …
Mark your calendar now for E-town Fair Week, August 17-22. We will be needing help with conducting the Bingo tent that week.
