President's Message

NOTE:   Due to the early publication date of this newsletter, and President Bob’s being out of town, there will be no Presidents Message this month.  This feature will return with the September newsletter.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

The first “meeting” this month will be a trip to Clipper Stadium in Lancaster to see the local professional baseball team, the Lancaster Barnstormers, in action. The game will be on Tuesday, August 5, and will begin at 7:00 p.m. and tickets will be $7.00 per person for a reserved seat.  This is a family and friend event so be sure to include them in your plans, as well.

Car pools for anyone interested will depart from the Lutheran Church parking lot on East High Street at 5:45 p.m.  Past President Dean will be distributing game tickets in this location between 5:30 and 5:45.  The Club will not be providing any food for this event but there are numerous food vendors at the stadium and, of course, you are free to purchase as much as you wish.

Congratulations, Lion Bud

At the regular meeting on June 24 Wilbur “Bud” Weaver was honored by receiving the Melvin Jones Award, the highest award which can be given by an individual Lions Club.  Bud was recognized for his long time service to Lionism.  He served as our Club President in 1955-56 and tells us that, over the years, he has served in every office except Treasurer and Tail Twister.  Perhaps his most notable achievement is his 61 years of perfect attendance, a record which will undoubtedly never be broken in our Club.

In addition to the Melvin Jones, Bud also received the Distinguished Service Award from District 14-D that evening, which was presented by Gene Hilton.

Welcome, Leroy!

We are pleased to welcome into membership in our Club, Leroy M. Hartley.  Leroy lives at 316 E. Cedar Street in Elizabethtown and was sponsored by Steve Roland.  If you haven’t yet met Leroy and welcomed him to our group, be sure to do it at the next opportunity.

White Cane Days

Paul Lesoine, Chairman of the White Cane Day effort, recently announced that the drive we conducted May 30 and 31 at Darrenkamp’s was very successful.  The local citizens supported our efforts to the tune of $530.00.  That, combined with the money from the drive held in the spring, brings the annual White Cane total to approximately $1000.00.  Thanks to all Lions who assisted with this program.

Yellow Books

Be sure to obtain a copy of the 2008-09 Yellow Book which will be available at a Club function in the near future.

Ready, Set … B-I-N-G-O !!

One of our most important fund raising events of the year will ake place during the week of August 18-23, and of course that ould be our Bingo Tent at the Elizabethtown Fair.  Chuck haffner has taken on the big job of chairing this event, but he ill need a maximum effort from all Lions who are able to help.

The first task will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7 when the tables and chairs are brought to the tent and set up. If you are available to assist with this job, just show up at the tent shortly before 1:00 that day.  With sufficient help, the task can be done in approximately one hour.

Bingo games are run from approximately 6:30 p.m. (whenever we have a sufficient number of players to start) until around 10:00 p.m.  If we have at least ten Lions on hand throughout that time span the work is easy, but the fewer members on site, the more difficult the work becomes.  There were sign-up sheets available at Club meetings in June and hopefully you signed up to work several two-hour shifts, or better yet, several evenings for the entire night, but

if you didn’t sign up it is still OK to just “show up” ready to work.  The simple truth is we need all the help we can muster throughout these six nights.

Then, the final job to be done for this fund raiser is the “tear down” on Sunday, August 24, at 1:00 p.m.  This is when the tables and chairs are wiped clean, loaded onto a truck, and returned to the Lutheran Church.  Like the set-up, with sufficient help this job can be done in an hour or less.  If you are available to assist with this task, just show up at the tent that day.

A One Question Quiz

Q:  What major Club event will take place on Saturday, September 13?

A:  Of course!  It’s the Car Cruise and Chicken Bar-B-Q.  You knew that, right?

The Car Cruise Committee has been working very hard to get this event set up and now we can all do our part to help.  Simply save a few hours that day – any time between 7:00 a.m. and approximately 3:00 p.m. will be good – and then come to the Elizabethtown Fair Grounds on East High Street and lend a hand.  There are a variety of jobs to be done throughout the day and one of the Committee members will “assign” a task to you when you arrive on site that day.

Remember … We Serve.  But the WAY we serve is by raising funds through activities such as the Car Cruise/Chicken Bar-B-Q, and the two others mentioned above.  Without the combined efforts of all our members on such activities, we would have no resources to help the less fortunate and the Lions Club would simply be a social club, not a service club.  So, mark your calendar now so you will be available on

September 13.

If you are available to solicit potential sponsors for the Cruise, please contact Glen Leib for instructions and names of possible firms or individuals to contact.  Obviously, this needs to be done as soon as possible.  Also, if you happen to know the name of potential sponsor(s) who are not already on the list, please talk to Glen.

A new feature in this year’s Cruise is the Model Car Show.  We also expect to see some of the Zembo Clowns make an appearance.

Tickets for the Bar-B-Q may be obtained from Dave Mueller.  The cost is $8.00 for the dinner, and $5.00 for a half-chicken.

Name Tags

We are in need of a few “older style” name tags – the type where a name can be inserted, but does not include a magnet as the method of attaching it to a shirt or jacket.  If you have such an item, please contact Dale Williams.

Club Officers for 2008-09

At the regular meeting on June 24 the elected Officers for the present Lions year were duly installed.  The primary officers are:

President           Bob Ardner            Third VP       (open)

First VP            Dan Connolly           Secretary      Dale Horst

Second VP        Tom Trayer             Treasurer       Dean Dochterman & Paul Lesoine

As you can see, we are still in need of a member to assume the position of Third Vice-President.  This person would have three full years to serve on the Board of Directors, observe and learn the duties and responsibilities of the Presidency, and then become the Club President for the 2011-12 Lions year.  Additionally, that person would have responsibilities for securing the speaker or program for six or fewer regular meetings in each year.  By assuming this position you would be providing a very important service to the Club and, in addition, would gain new insights about how Lions Clubs function, would have an opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills, and enhance your personal background.

Although the positions of Secretary and Treasurer appear to be filled, in reality, this is a temporary arrangement.  Dale Horst, who has served as Secretary for a number of years has requested to be relieved of those duties, and Dean and Paul have agreed to share the duties of Treasurer until a more permanent arrangement can be established.  So we need three members to step forward and volunteer to serve in important positions – will you do it?

District Officers

At the District 14-D Convention held in April, Steve Benedict was elected to serve as Vice-District Governor this year and will assume the District Governor’s duties next year.  Also, Barry Smedley, from the Mount Joy Lions Club, has been appointed to the position of Zone Chairman for Zone 5 (our Zone).  We extend our congratulations and best wishes to both Steve and Barry.

Hmmmmm ….  J

Tricky wording for employee “recommendations”:

For the chronically absent:  “A man like him is hard to find.” or “It seemed his career was just taking off.”

*  For the office drunk:  “I feel his real talent was wasted here.” or “We generally found him loaded with work.”

*  For an employee with no ambition:  “He could not care less about the number of hours he had to put in.” or

“You would indeed be fortunate to get this person to work for you.” or “He consistently achieves the

                  standards he sets for himself.”

*  For an employee who is so unproductive that the job is better left unfilled:  “I can assure you that no person would

                   be better for the job.”

*  For an employee who is not worth further consideration as a job candidate:  “I would urge you to waste no time in

making this candidate an offer of employment.” or “All in all, I cannot say enough good things about

this candidate or recommend him too highly.”
