 “We  Serve”

   May 2005

President’s Message

I hope every Lion enjoyed and appreciated the month of April as  much as I did.  We not only had our usual bountiful display of flowers and blossoming trees, but the weather was an added bonus.  The sun made its appearance on a regular basis, and the temperatures were very favorable. Our April 6 Tri-Club meeting at Palmyra got our Lions' month off to a good start.  We had sixteen Lions attending this gala event.  The  program on Identity Theft was very informational and relevant.  It was also an opportunity to socialize with members of other Clubs.  I sat next to Hershey's President and was pleasantly surprised to learn that their First Vice President is a lady.  She appeared to be very excited about assuming the responsibilities of this office.  I can envision down the road that our Club will be in a similar position.

I am also happy that Elizabethtown was well represented at the School of Instruction on April 27th. We are fortunate to have a dedicated pride of Lions.  It is a sure sign that our Club will remain strong far into the future.

The big event for May is the State Convention that will take place on the 19th through the 23rd at Johnstown.  It would be great to have representation.  This beautiful month would also be a good time to recruit a new member.

Welcome, New Lions!

We are pleased to welcome, and introduce, the two newest members of our Club, Lion Sam Zeager and Lion Bob Ulmer.  Both were inducted at our regular meeting on April 26.

Lion Sam Zeager and his wife, Joy, live at 606 Hess Road, Elizabethtown.  They have a 25-year old son named Tim who, according to Lion Sam, is a very talented musician.  Lion Sam is employed by Jack Gaughen Realtor and enjoys following the NASCAR circuit.  He tells us that he also is fond of music and is a singer.  Lion Sam was sponsored by our President, Lion Bill.  Welcome, Lion Sam!

Our other new member, Lion Bob Ulmer, has lived in Elizabethtown for approximately a year now, having most recently lived in Wellsboro, PA.  He and his wife, Jeannie, have an adult son who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy and is stationed in Japan, and a daughter, Jeanne Marie, at home.  Lion Bob is the Business Manager for the Elizabethtown Area School District and in his free time enjoys fishing, cross country skiing, and virtually anything pertaining to the American Civil War – especially the Battle of Gettysburg.  Lion Bob was sponsored by Lion Jerry Lorson.

We are happy that these two outstanding individuals have chosen to join us in our efforts to assist those less fortunate than ourselves.  Please introduce yourself to them at the next meeting and help them to feel welcome.

Programs for May

Tuesday, May 10, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – We will be privileged to have as our guest this evening Bob Clouser, who is a professional fly fisherman as well as a guide on the Susquehanna River.  Bob lives in Royalton and is the

owner of Clouser's Fly Shop.  He has invented fishing lures which are literally known around the world.  He will be speaking about small mouth bass fishing on the Susquehanna, with fly fishing equipment.  Even if you're not a fisherman you will find this program to be very interesting.  You won't want to miss this one!

Tuesday, May 24, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – As Lions, it is important that we all understand the

Leader Dog program, which is a major effort of Lions Clubs from all over the United States to fund the training of dogs to assist blind individuals, and then train the individuals in the care, handling and use of these dogs. Our speaker this night will be Lion Scott Lyons, from the Greater-Lebanon Valley Lions Club.  Lion Scott is the District 14-D Chairman of      the Leader Dog Program and he will be bringing us an informational session which will be followed by a brief opportunity to have your questions about this program answered.  You will be surprised and perhaps even amazed by

what you will learn at this meeting.  Make it a point to attend this regular meeting of our Club.

Greeters for May

The important task of meeting and greeting each arriving Lion at our meeting on May 10 will fall to Lions Andy Maloney and Dale Williams.  This same responsibility two weeks later, at our meeting on May 24, will go to Lions Harry Reed and Bud Weaver.

State Convention

In this month's message Lion President Bill mentioned the annual Lions State Convention which will take place in Johnstown May 19-23.  If you have never attended one of these events you are missing one of the enjoyable things available to you as a Lion.  At these you can meet fellow Lions from all over the state, attend interesting workshops on a wide variety of relevant topics, participate in the sharing of ideas – to paraphrase Yogi Berra, you can hear a lot just by listening –and there is even a parade in which you can participate, or just observe.  It's a valuable experience and one you should consider having.  If you are interested in being a part of this year's Convention, contact Lion President Bill or Lion Secretary Dale for information and registration forms.

A Chuckle or Two

*  There was a great loss today in the entertainment world.  The man who wrote the song "Hokey Pokey" died.  What was really horrible is that they had trouble keeping the body in the casket.  They put his left leg in …well, you know the rest.

*  I have enough money to last me the rest of my life – unless I buy something.  – Jackie Mason

*  The doctor was certainly right when he said jogging would add years to my life.  I feel ten years older already.

*  Congress, after years of stalling, finally got around to clearing the way for informal discussions that might lead to

possible formal talks that could potentially produce some kind of tentative agreements.
