“We Serve
March 2006
President’s Message
With the mild weather Mother Nature appears to be getting a jump on Spring and so should the Lions! Now we need to do the leg work for the Car Cruise, Bingo and other activities of our Club. Please see me at a meeting or call to discuss these opportunities to help the Club and the community.
As the weather has allowed us to go outside more, consider looking for future Lions both young and old. We are taking nominations for both a boy and a girl to attend the seminars at Beacon Lodge. Please contact me ASAP with your recommendations! Secondly, we are always looking for new Lions to join our Club. If you are aware of any possibilities, now is a great time to invite them to see what we do as Lions. I would like to see our Club add three new members before our summer break!!!
Lastly, at the recent Past Presidents meeting I realized it is almost over. My year as Lion President is three-fourths complete! Truthfully, it has gone lightning quick and has been more enjoyable than expected. I have a new appreciation for Lions and the members of this Club. I strongly urge each of you to consider taking a position of leadership within the Club. I am sure you will have a positive experience as I have had. Please see me or V.P. Joe if you have any thoughts, questions or interest in any positions in the Club.

Programs for March
Tuesday, March 14, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – Andy Fantom, a member of the Marietta Lions Club and a long-time District official, will be a guest at this meeting. He will bring us up to date on happenings at the District level as well as information about the District Convention which will occur in April. Additionally, we will conduct a "brainstorming" session to gather ideas which may be developed to become fund raisers for our Club. We need your thoughts
on this important matter so please plan to be there to share them.
Tuesday, March 28, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – Donna Dencler, from the Lancaster-Lebanon
Intermediate Unit, will be our guest and will inform us about the local Family Literacy Program,
which she heads. The program offers ESL and GED classes to adults, specifically targeting parents of young children. By educating the parents, they feel they can also positively impact the academic and social development of involved children. You will probably be surprised by
the information Donna will bring to us this evening.
Greeters for March
March 14 meeting – Charlie Metzger and Ray Powell
March 28 meeting – Dick Sutton and Dale Williams
Annual Tri-Club Meeting
We will be joining the members of the Lions Clubs of Hershey and Palmyra on Tuesday, April 18 (the third Tuesday of the month – an "off night" for us so mark your calendar now) for our annual HEP meeting. Hershey will serve as the host club this night and has scheduled it for 6:15 p.m. at the Hershey Italian Club, 128 Hillcrest Road, in Hershey. We will car pool from the Lutheran Church parking lot on East High Street at 5:40 p.m. The cost will be our usual $8.00 at the door that evening. We understand the program will be a "History of Hershey," which promises to be interesting. Sign-up sheets will be circulated at our Club meetings in March.
Egg Coloring Coming Up
As always, the month of April promises to be a busy month for us so we want to get activities on your calendars now, before they fill up with other items. In addition to the Tri-Club noted above, please make plans to attend the famous Egg Coloring night on Tuesday, April 11, at 6:15 p.m. at the Methodist Church. This will serve as our "regular" first meeting of that month. Then, on the day before Easter, Saturday, April 15, we will once again hold the Easter Egg Hunt for the children of our community. More details will be provided in next month's Lions Ledger and we will need your help on each of these activities but, for now, reserve these dates on your busy schedule.
Remember Them
Our Club has a Health and Welfare Committee whose job is to stay in touch with any of our members who may be ill or have other difficult issues to face. That Committee is chaired by John Horst and they do a fine job but we should each try to enhance what they do by adding a personal touch. When you hear about one of our members who is "under the weather" please try to find the time to send a card, make a phone call, or pay a visit (with advance notice, of course) to express both your personal concern and support as well as those of the Club. Your act of kindness will be greatly appreciated.
Elections Approaching
Although the Lions year doesn't end until June 30, our Club is already moving to put into place the leadership for the 2006-07 year. A slate of candidates for the offices (well, most of them anyway) has been developed(see related story on next page) and we will open the slate for additional nominations from the floor at our first meeting this month. If you would like to be a candidate for any of the leadership positions, please make your wishes known to President Chris or Vice President Joe as soon as possible so they will have time to properly handle your request. Prior to nominating someone else you must be sure that person is willing to have his/her name added to the slate of candidates and that he/she is willing to serve if elected.
Following the nominations on March 14, we will conduct the formal election of next year's officers at the Club's regular meeting on March 28. This will enable us to submit the list of 2006-07 officers to District 14-D and Lions International on time and, additionally, will enable the newly elected officers to officially begin their planning for next year.
Both these meetings are critically important to the continued smooth functioning of our Club so plan to attend both and take part in these vital steps.

Riddle
QUESTION: What do the row of chairs above, and some of the positions in the list of candidates above, have in common?
ANSWER: They are empty!
Unfortunately, at the time this newsletter went to print, we were still seeking a few candidates to fill some of the positions in next year's slate of officers (those showing TBA). If your name is not already listed above, won't you please consider filling one of these important roles in our Club? If you have any questions about the responsibilities of any of these currently empty positions, speak to President Chris or Vice President Joe. Serving as an officer is one enjoyable and gratifying way to be a contributing member of our Club, and is a way of making your ideas about the Club's operation known. Remember our motto: We Serve.
