President’s Message

It seems like yesterday when I sat down and began paging through "The Binder," a home to every document of interest or importance from the year Lion Mike served as our President.  The first thing I read was a statement where he quoted Lion Henri who told him his year as President would be his best ever in Lions.  There were times I questioned that, especially with the frustration of not being able to start a LEO Club, but I must say it proved to be a very profound statement.  As President you see the unnoticed effort put forth by many members to make our Club successful, you develop new friendships working with areas of the Club you never have before and you truly understand what being a Lion is all about.  Reading the thank-you cards from all those we served including some from the 21 members of our community that we purchased eye glasses for has an impact.  The thousands of dollars we raised went to help many in need.  Thank you, Lions, for all your support and work this year.  May it continue into the new Lions year with Lion Joe.  His leadership will only continue the success of our Club.

As we head into our summer break, please do not forget that we have two major events right away in August and September.  Bingo starts August 20th and the Car Cruise is September 9th.  Sign-up sheets will be at both meetings in June.

Welcome, Brian!

We are pleased to welcome into membership Brian Leatherman, who was inducted at our meeting on May 23.  Brian is a graduate of Elizabethtown College and is currently employed as a financial advisor with Raymond James Financial Services on South Market Street.  Brian will be married this summer.  His sponsor in Lions is Dean Dochterman.  Please introduce yourself to Brian and make him feel welcome as our newest Lion.

Programs in June

Tuesday, June 13, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – Our guest presenter at this meeting will be Mr. Josh Glacken, who is the District Executive for the Harvest District of the Boy Scouts of America.  He will inform us about scouting in our District and Council.  This promises to be a very informative talk about a topic most of us know too little about.

Tuesday, June 27, 6:15 p.m. at the Fire Hall – This will be the final regular meeting of the Lions year for our Club and, as has been the tradition, this will be the night when we install all the new Club Officers for the next year.  Come out to thank the outgoing Officers for their year of service, and to welcome our new Officers to their positions of leadership.

Award Winners

On Monday evening, May 15, in the local high school auditorium, individual members of the graduating class of 2006 were honored  for their various achievements and honors.  Do you know which organization gives the most awards to these deserving seniors?  Yep, it is us, the Elizabethtown Lions Club!  Not only do we give the most awards, but the collective value of these awards ranks as one of the highest of those given out each year.  We thought you might be interested in knowing who won these awards:

Jane K. Hoover Award … Outstanding Female Athlete:  Janelle Garber

Elizabethtown Lions Club Award … Outstanding Male Athlete:  Jared Sernoffsky

Lions Club Business Award … Outstanding student, Business Department:  Shane Gallagher

Each of these three students received a fine plaque and a bond. In addition to these, our Club also awards a nice plaque to the outstanding senior member of each of the varsity sports offered at the local high school.  The following were the recipients of these awards:

Our thanks go out to Jay Walmer who handled the coordination between our Club and the high school, and who attended the Awards Night program to hand out the awards to each winning student.  The work of our members in our fund raising projects made the presentation of these awards and bonds possible.

It should also be noted that the Club received a very nice thank you letter from Shane Gallagher, the winner of the Business Department award.

Great Meetings!

If you missed either of the Club meetings in May, you missed a good time.  At both meetings we had a lot of fun (we almost voted to unseat Mike Myers as our resident joke teller … just kidding … but it was a great gag), we had some "unexpected" prizes for a 50-50 drawing, and both  programs were very interesting.

Mark Your Calendars!

Summer is typically a bit of a "down" time for our Club, but please make note of two very important activities which occur late in the summer season – Bingo, at the town Fair, and our annual Car Cruise, which this year will occur on Saturday, September 9, also at the Fair Grounds.

Bingo will begin on Sunday afternoon, August 20, with the set up of the tables and chairs and the other equipment in the large tent.  We will be needing some "manpower" for that job.  Then, on Monday, August 21, the Fair opens and our Bingo tent will be operating each evening of that week, including Saturday.  As you know, we will need lots of help throughout that week.  The task is easy, if we get enough Lions out each evening to help.  There will be more information available in the August issue of the Lions Ledger (in case you forgot, that's what we call this newsletter) but please mark your calendar now and reserve as many evenings, or parts of evenings, as possible to help the Club with this important fund raiser.

The other major activity which comes near the end of summer for us is the Lions Club Car Cruise.  The committee has already begun the work required to make this event a success, but they will need the assistance of other members both prior to the day of the event, and on the day of the Cruise. Although the actual show will run from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, we will need help beginning at 7:00 that morning to set up, and of course, we'll need some help at the end of the show to help clean up.  During the actual event there will also be jobs which Lions need to handle, so any time you can give to this fund raiser will be greatly appreciated by the Committee.  Like all our other activities, when we all work together, nobody has to work too hard, but if the jobs fall to a small number of Lions, it can become a bit burdensome.  If you would like to help with the "up front" tasks for the Car Cruise, please contact either Steve Roland (361-9112), Glen Leib (367-4002) or Keith Perry (367-7346).

More information about each of these two important events will appear in the August issue of this newsletter, and sign-up sheets will be made available at future meetings but, in the meantime, mark your calendar and reserve some time to help with both these activities.

Looking Ahead …

Remember, there will be NO REGULAR MEETINGS IN JULY.   Following the meeting on June 27, our next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, August 8.  Again, more details about that meeting will appear in the August issue of this newsletter.

There will be NO NEWSLETTER published in July.  We will be back on schedule in August, and you can expect to receive your newsletter sometime between August 2 and 4, depending on how you receive it – email or postal service – and how efficient our local post office is.  So, from the entire staff here at the offices of the Lions Ledger have a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer!

Here's to You

Guy:  Here's hoping you're in Heaven ten minutes before the devil knows you're dead!

                Gal:  What's that mean?

                Guy:  It's an Irish toast.

Gal:  Oh.  Well, here's to bread, eggs and cinnamon.

                Guy:  Huh?

                Gal:  That's French toast.
