President's Message
I remember when our son was born, a friend sent my wife and me a card. On the outside was a simple drawing of a lion and a lamb lying together, next to an infant. Inside was the scriptural message, "and a little child shall lead them." I've always liked that card and remember it often, especially around Christmas. To me it's a message of hope. As long as life continues, is reborn, there's the possibility that it will get better and will enjoy a brighter future. Nothing reminds you of life's possibilities more than a newborn child.
After all, we don't need to look very far to see where improvement is needed. Whether at an Amish school across the county or in areas of conflict across the globe, tragedies occur, sapping our strength and causing us to question what the future holds. Maintaining hope that a brighter tomorrow exists can be its own challenge, but it's a challenge that has to be met. Centuries ago, a Child was born to bring hope to a troubled world. His birth continues to offer hope to us today. This Christmas, may we find renewed hope in the birth of the Savior, and may His love continue to bless us with peace and joy. Merry Christmas to you and yours! Lion Joe
Lion King
Although we expected the reign of Lion King Dean to end last month, it will continue at least until the first meeting of the new year when we anticipate our newest member to be inducted. We think Lion King Dean is beginning to really enjoy this status. Have you noticed the wide smile on his face when it is announced at each meeting he will be the first person through the buffet line? Football Awards Banquet
Remember – the annual Frantz-Rider-Yohe Football Awards Banquet will be held Thursday, December 7 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the General Sutter Inn in Lititz. Car pools for our members will form at 5:45 p.m. in the parking lot of the Lutheran Church on East High Street. This will serve as our first meeting in December.
Family Christmas Party
One of the highlights of our Lions year is the Family Christmas Party we hold each December. This year it will be on Tuesday, December 12 beginning at our regular time of 6:15 p.m. Of course, we will be at the Methodist Church for the Party this year. Be sure to mark your calendar for this event!
We will need a little help setting up the meeting room on the day of the Party so if you can help with this task please be at the Church at 2:00 p.m. to help move a few tables and chairs.
Pie Sale Completed
Our annual Shoo-fly pie, and Holiday pie, sale has been successfully completed and the totals are in. We sold a total of 391 pies and although there are still some outstanding items to be tabulated it appears we will realize a profit of approximately $900.00. Naturally, all this money will be used for charitable purposes. Congratulations go out to Lion President Joe, Barney Myer and their committee for another terrific job, and thanks to all the members who sold pies this year.
Ornaments Sale
As one project ends, another begins – at least at this time of year. Project chairman Tom Trayer is leading the sale of our Elizabethtown Collectible Commemoratives (also known as the Lions ornaments) and this effort is well underway. This year's ornament depicts the "old" Catholic Church in Elizabethtown which is very historic building in our community. It is a very attractive item, one which you will want to add to your growing collection of these unique ornaments, and one which your friends and neighbors will find very appealing. We have just this month left to sell them so please do your best to help make this project a success again this year.
This is the fourth in a series of these collectibles and we still have a few of the ones from the previous three years so if you missed out on any of the earlier editions, please contact Tom to purchase the one(s) you are missing.
Quad-Club Meeting
For quite a few years we have participated in a Quad-Club meeting with our fellow Lions from the Mount Joy Club, the Marietta Club, and the Conoy Club (for those of you doing the math, we are the fourth Club) and this year's gathering will be held at the Bainbridge Fire Hall on Tuesday, January 16, which is the third Tuesday of that month. It will be hosted by the Conoy Lions Club. The date listed in our yellow book for this event is incorrect. The correct date is January 16. More information about this meeting will appear in next month's newsletter but save the date on your calendar.
Pay by Check, Please
Our Club Treasurers handle a large amount of money over the course of a year, and they consistently do a terrific job in what is often difficult circumstances. One of the things which we can all do to make their work a little easier will be to make all payments to the Club via personal check rather than cash. That way they will have a definite record of who paid them, and for what, and you will also have a record of the payment being made. The exception to this, of course, is paying for your meal at our regular Club meetings. For those meals cash is the preferred method and it will be easier for everyone if we remember to bring the correct change.
Rock-Paper-Scissors Tournament
Yes, THAT game … the one we used to use to settle small disputes, decide who batted first, who brought the ball down court first, etc. In January we will announce the details of the first Elizabethtown Lions Club R-P-S Tournament , which will be conducted in early 2007. For now, the words to remember are … GET READY TO RUMBLE! J
