History of Service Making a difference
Ready for tomorrow You can make a difference
The Elizabethtown Lions Club is an autonomous organization but is a part of a much larger body, Lions International. Our Club was founded in 1941 by a small group of individuals who wanted to make our community a better place to live. More specifically, the goal was to help the less fortunate in whatever ways help was needed. Since that time the Club has grown in membership but our purpose has not changed --we exist to provide service to people both here in our own community and, through Lions International to needy individuals around the world.
Through the years the Elizabethtown Lions Club has enriched our town, and countless individual residents, in ways too numerous to list is this small brochure but we continue to carry out the motto of Lions --We Serve!
Although our Lions Club will consider any stated need as a possible area where we might be of service, our primary focus is on helping the blind and visually impaired. In addition, the Elizabethtown Lions Club contributes to local institutions such as the public library, and fire company, provides awards and recognition to deserving students from the local schools, sponsors a Pre-teen baseball team, conducts an annual Easter Egg Hunt for the children of our area, and helps provide financial support to various other projects and activities in the Elizabethtown area.
All money used in our service projects and activities is earned through several fund raising endeavors throughout the year. Examples of such activities include the operation of the Bingo tent at the Elizabethtown Fair, the sale of pies prior to Thanksgiving, holding a cheerleading competition for teams from south central Pennsylvania each spring, holding a car show in the fall, and selling the small gold-plated Ornaments".
Although there are no financial benefits to being a Lion, there are other things gained through membership which may be more meaningful. For example: You will receive the joy of knowing you have helped make life better for others who are less fortunate than yourself. You will have the pleasure of meeting men and women who are civic minded and who are interested in some of the same goals of service that you are. Often these acquaintances become life-long friendships.
Through the various offices and chairing of the Club's projects and activities, you can have opportunities to develop your skills of management and leadership.
Since 1917, local Lions clubs have offered, people just like you the opportunity to give something back to their community. Today, with over 1 .4 million men and women in more than 180 countries, Lions have expanded their focus to help meet the ever increasing needs of our society.
As a member of a lions club, you become aware of the needs of our community and have the advantage to effectively make a difference. Our club provides volunteers with project management assistance, leadership training, personal development opportunities, and organized fundraising programs. Being a lion empowers you to help others in a way that no one person could alone.
Now more than ever, people with vision problems, the environment, our senior community, our youth and the disadvantaged around the world need your help. You can make a difference.
